Ford Probe, Mazda 626 & MX6 FAQ

Regular Maintenance

Tyres & Wheels

Tyres
US: The common ProbeGT tyre is the Goodyear Gatorback (known as VR/ZR in the UK). Whilst providing a long life it is not particularly good in the wet/snow. Discount tyres can be obtained from www.tirerack.com with shipping worldwide (covering Snow/Road/Track tyres). Alternatively, Discount Tire can provide some good alternative deals.

UK: Those wanting better wet/dry weather performance may want to try Bridgestone SO2 or the cheaper "wet-tyre" Goodyear Eagle F1 (as fitted to 95 MX6s). Better wet & ride performance can be had from Dunlop SP9000. Note that the best rain-tyre of 5 years ago is now probably the worst - technology has changed considerably regarding stopping distances in terms of design, construction, silica.

A tire/tyre underflated by 10% will have a shorter life and use 10% more fuel. Tire/Tyre pressures should be measured on a morning before driving has heated the tire/tyre up - pressure recommendations are for when cold.

Tyre Life
Rotate tyres every 6k miles (ensuring directionallity for wet driving) helps to prolong tyre life considerably.

OEM Tyre pressure is compromise between longevity/ride-quality/performance, the ratio between front:rear being chosen to maintain predictable handling and should be maintained within 4psi. Throttle Trailing Oversteer (TTO) on the MX6/626/PGT is minimal, even when combined with braking in the wet (unlike Honda Accords).
