Note the above procedure is a little complex and requires an oil & oil-filter change.
The ECU automatically adjusts timing based on the knock sensor from 6-18 degrees, a very considerable range. Base timing is 10 degrees +/- 1 degree.
Cars with 2.0 engines, like Miata/MX5s, do not have knock sensors and thus can't
take advantage of higher-octane fuels without adjusting their timing. The
miata/MX5 groups often do this, but there is no safety back-track if pinging
does occur due to carbon-buildup (on any engine) or simply poor quality
gasoline a risk of engine damage as a result.
